Why Tulikivi soapstone fireplaces

Maybe it's because Tulikivi sets new trends. Or maybe it's down to our great experience. Whatever the reason, in the last 25 years 200,000 customers have had a Tulikivi soapstone fireplace fitted to turn their house or apartment into a home.
There are many good reasons for Tulikivi

Heat retainability
Tulikivi produces all its fireplaces from its own soapstone. A superior fireplace material taken from quarries close to the Finnish town of Juuka. This stone has the unique property of storing and conducting heat. Just 3 hours of heating are all that most of our models need to keep rooms pleasantly warm for up to 24 hours.

Contra Flow
Tulikivi soapstone fireplaces work on the contra flow principle, which is designed to retain the heat energy contained in the hot smoke gases.

Unique soapstone

Tulikivi fireplaces are made of soapstone. Tulikivi excavates this unique natural material in Finland. Its color ranges from pearly gray to beautifully speckled. The variations in the natural stone surface give the fireplaces more character. The characteristics of Tulikivi soapstone have been rigorously tested. All stone excavated in Nunnanlahti, Juuka, comes from the same deposit. Quarry map.

Radiant heat
In contrast to conventional fireplaces, the Tulikivi soapstone fireplaces emit their warmth mostly as pleasant radiant heat. A healthy form of heat which is good for the body, the soul and the spirit. Advantages which, incidentally, only a heat retaining fireplace can offer.

Authorized distributors
There are 8 authorized distributors to serve you in North America. There you can get all the key information you need and reliable, all-round service. All Tulikivi soapstone fireplaces are always sold installation included.

Tulikivi collection
The largest collection. The widest variety of stones and grains. The widest range of soapstone types. Many different decorative elements and attractive surface treatments. At Tulikivi there are practically no limits to individuality and personal taste. The result is always the fireplace of your dreams.

Safety and product tests
Top quality and modern, high-grade technology. We have our products tested regularly by independent institutes and laboratories. Developer teams are working continually to make improvements and new products.

Ecology
Wood is a particularly environment-friendly fuel with high energy content but very low emission levels. The fact that our technology is particularly environment-friendly is confirmed by the Baubiologische Institut in Rosenheim.

Heat Storage (Tulikivi) Heat Storage (Tulikivi)
Heat storage

A Tulikivi soapstone fireplace stores the heat generated from burning wood very effectively and then releases it very slowly and evenly into the room.

The diagram shows the benefits of Tulikivi. An accustomed convection fireplace heats up very quickly, releases the warmth immediately and then cools back down again quickly. A solid soapstone Tulikivi fireplace stores the heat and releases it gradually into the room over a long period of time

Comosition Of Sopastone (Tulikivi) Comosition Of Sopastone (Tulikivi)
Soapstone - a miracle of nature

Created by a process, which started over 2.5 billion years ago. Minerals began to recrystallize due to the high pressure and great heat. The result of this metamorphosis was a talc-based rock containing magnesite. It was later given the name "soapstone" - and no industrial process can reproduce it perfectly.
Composition

Talc 40-50 %, magnesite 40-50 %, penninite 5-8 %. The high talc content means that soapstone is easy to work. The magnesite, on the other hand, gives it resilience and strength.

The properties

Volume weight 2980–3100 kg/m3
Melting point 1630–1640 oC
Specific heat 0.98 kJ/kg oC
Thermal conductivity 7.4 W/mK
Compression strength 25 MN/m2
Bending tensile strength 16.8 MN/m2
Hardness 2-3 Mohs
Thermal expansion 0.0017 %/oC
Acid and alkaline resistant
Withstands Arctic and
Tropical climates

Fulfils the material requirements for cooking and eating utensils as defined in § 16 of the Finnish Food Regulations

Radiant Heat (Tulikivi) Radiant Heat (Tulikivi)
Radiant Heat

When the Tulikivi Corporation revived the building of soapstone fireplaces almost 20 years ago, we had no idea that we might actually be reviving our customers!
After reviewing reams of research it dawned on us.

Our Tulikivi heat is actually a source of health and happiness.

And the best news is that all you have to do to benefit from its healing powers is to sit back and relax.

A Healthy Alternative
Tulikivi wouldn't suggest that a soapstone fireplace is good for you unless there was a lot of evidence. Examples of its healthy side effects can be found everywhere from ancient civilizations to modern medicine. Radiant heat has been used to stabilize blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the "tepidariums" of ancient Rome as well as in the infrared saunas of modern Europe.

The ancient Chinese used glowing "moxa sticks" together with acupuncture. Radiant heat is used today to treat scar tissue, relieve sore muscles and joints and to counter reduced vitality and resistance at the end of winter.

Health and Happiness
Radiant heat also seems to be effective in helping your body ward off a variety of infectious diseases, including the flu. 2000 years ago the physician Paemendides said, "Let me induce fever and I will cure every disease." That may have been exaggerating, but fevers do help the body fight infections.

Regular radiant heat produces a similar effect. When winter sets in and the nights get longer, we get less and less radiant heat from the sun. Many people get listless or even depressed. That's because a lack of radiant heat can result in reduced vitality and resistance, although that might also be caused by lack of light.

Radiant heat in your home can provide relief from chronic fatigue by stimulating blood circulation, increasing your metabolism, and helping the body eliminate toxins more efficiently.

When warm air rises,
it leaves a cold
draft at floor-level.

Wider is Better
As mentioned earlier, cold radiation leads to a narrowing of the blood vessels, and radiant heat helps widen them. Wider blood vessels means the skin ages more slowly, blood pressure is lower, there are fewer varicose veins and a lower incidence of heart and circulatory diseases. In fact, infrared saunas have been found more effective in reducing blood pressure than medications.

Out Of Breath?
Soapstone heating can provide relief for people with respiratory problems. The cooler air produced by radiant heat allows us to breathe more deeply and more calmly. With forced-air heating, air is constantly circulated, along with dust and allergens. Dust and allergens, which have come into contact with hot metal surfaces, are more irritating to people who already have problems breathing.

Forced-air heating also dries out the air, by causing condensation on cold floors and walls. The condensation encourages the proliferation of household mites and fungus.

But with a Tulikivi fireplace the air isn't forced out. Dust and allergens do not circulate that much. And because the Tulikivi fireplaces' radiant heat is stored in walls, condensation doesn't occur under normal conditions. The air is easy to breathe and air humidity is not disturbed.

The air in your house must be renewed every one or two hours. And since forced air heating systems store heat in the air, you basically reheat your house over and over.

With soapstone radiant heat more heat is stored in the walls, so healthy ventilation means less heat loss and more efficient heating.

One Last Piece of Advice
It's clear that radiant heat has a positive effect on your health. It promotes better circulation, more efficient respiration, better metabolism and a stronger immune system. It remains unclear, however, how strong these positive effects may be. So while it's a healthy idea to have a Tulikivi, never use it instead of advice or medications prescribed by your doctor.

The Next Million Years
More and more fireplaces are becoming like good television. They offer soothing programming we can't stop watching. But do we still need more than the look of flames? Will we look beyond the dancing fire to feel the many effects of warm, radiant heat?

Tulikivi is confident that you'll feel the difference. We know that history and research support our claims, and we will continue to support research on the effects of radiant heat.

Flexible heat is essential to our modern lifestyles. The rapid heat conduction of Tulikivi soapstone already provides you with the most flexible radiant heating system available today. And even though radiant heat has been around for over a million years, we continue to study and apply the latest technology and breakthrough designs. Because at Tulikivi we want to use radiant heat to make the next million years even more efficient, warm and healthy.

We are continuing to develop

Getting even better. That's something we work on every day. And the result is clear and clean: ultramodern, revolutionary combustion technology which allows especially effective and clean burning of the wood. The new range of fireplaces are identified by the following label: This development not only saves energy and protects the environment, it is also highly user-friendly. Because the burning itself is not dependent on the way in which the wood is stacked, or by different types of wood. The firewood can be laid horizontally on the grate or loosely stacked up vertically. Nor is it necessary to regulate the air intake while heating or when adding more wood. The burning performance of the new fireplace technology is constantly given a "very good" rating in all applications.

The heat energy is used more effectively thanks to the whirl chamber

The entire fire chamber of the new generation of Tulikivi fireplaces is designed as a whirl chamber. The shape of the fire chamber causes the heated gases to rotate, thereby keeping them for longer in the fire chamber. This makes the overall combustion process cleaner and ensures that the heat energy is used more effectively.

Intelligent air supply guarantees clean burning

The air required for burning is fed into the fire chamber through the grate and the optimized vents in the cast-iron wall panels. In contrast to conventional systems, most of the combustion air flows through these vents and only a small amount comes through the grate. This prevents the blazing fire from cooling down too much on the grate in the initial and end phases; the wood then burns very cleanly. Some of the combustion air flows continually across the embers through two side vents near the grate. This ensures that any added wood ignites very quickly, keeping the burning moderate and even.

The Tulikivi soapstone fireplaces work on the contra flow principle. This is designed to retain the heat energy contained in the hot smoke gases. The flames rise from the fire chamber into the secondary combustion chamber from where they spread into the side ducts. The smoke gases burn completely in the side ducts and their heat energy is stored in the stone of the stove; the warmth is then released into the room in the form of radiant heat. When designing a fireplace, a great deal of attention is paid to ensuring that the thermal storage mass is located where the heat is released during the burning process.

The Tulikivi soapstone bakeoven fireplace has one chimney hood instead of two. The system is patented. The wood can be burned separately either in the fire chamber of the fireplace or in the bakeoven. The entire bakeoven fireplace heats up evenly from top to bottom regardless of which fire chamber you use. This is made possible by an ingenious recirculation system for fire and smoke gases. This solution is unique amongst heat retaining fireplaces.

The Tulikivi soapstone bakeovenswork on the double combustion principle. The patented solution uses the last energy particles of the wood and retains the baking heat for longer. The wood is burned in the fire chamber of the oven from where the uncombusted smoke gases are carried by the flames into the secondary combustion chamber. As a result of the secondary combustion air flowing through the ash flap and the grate, these gases, too, are burned to yield usable heat. Finally the charred wood falls, via the rear of the fire chamber, onto the grate where it quickly burns, giving off further heat. No special smoke gas vent is necessary.

Ecology Ecology
Tulikivi fireplaces as a supplementary heat source

During cold weather, the Tulikivi fireplace is ideal as a supplementary heating source to reduce the consumption of electricity, oil or gas. Normally over half of the heat energy we use is consumed during the 3 coldest months of winter. If a Tulikivi heating stove is used to heat the house or the apartment during this period, only 10% of the annual heating energy is consumed. During the frost period, however, 50% of the heating output is produced. This by using an average of just 6 cubic meters of firewood.
Smoke gases and efficiency

The wood burns cleanly in Tulikivi fireplaces, with an even current of air and hot flames. The contra flow principle means that the heat energy is quickly stored in the fireplace’s stones and then released slowly and evenly.

A few points now on the subject of fumes and efficiency: the fumes emitted by the Tulikivi fireplaces are below the requirements of the German DIN 18891 norm (also Washington state and Colorado state), but the efficiency level is higher than stipulated. This shows that Tulikivi heating stoves are not only a healthy alternative, but that they are also friendly to the environment. Also, the amount of harm caused to the atmosphere by the smoke gases from burning wood is negligible. The nitrogen content of wood is approx. 0.05%. The smoke gases therefore only contain tiny quantities of nitrogen oxide. The sulfur content of wood is also minimal.

Emissions tables

Always use dried wood

Only wood which has been properly stored and dried should be burned in Tulikivi fireplaces. Follow this simple rule and your fireplace will give you a lifetime of pleasure. Waste and refuse should never be burned. This is mainly due to the resulting nitrogen and sulfur dioxide emissions.

Energy content of firewood

The thermal value of all wood types listed below is roughly 4.1 kWh/kg at 15% humidity. In terms of energy content, 2.5 kg of wood corresponds to one liter of oil.

Effective thermal value of dry substance

Wood kWh/kg
Pine 5.3
Fir 5.2
Birch 5.3
Alder 5.2
Aspen 5.1
Oak 5.1
